There may be no better place to get suggestions for running your business than from your employees. Though there are consultants out there, and other experts that may be of service to you, you should realize that those who are coming up with the best ideas are the ones who work for you on a daily basis, and they are sometimes afraid to speak up for fear of being wrong, or for fear of appearing stupid. This is why it is a good idea to look into employee suggestion programs to help give your employees the courage to speak up when they have something to share.
There are many different types of employee suggestion programs, but you might just want to take your time and make up your own. You know your employees the best, and you might be more aware of what might motivate them to share. You should always make sure that you make your employee suggestion programs easy to use, and make them no-fault. Keep the process straight forward, and let them know that their ideas might help and they might not, but the ones that don’t work won’t affect their position within the company.
Also remember that some of the things you hear during employee suggestion programs might seem off the wall, but most of them will make sense in some manner. You may have to refine the ideas, or perhaps you might ask what they envisioned the final outcome to be. Though many of the suggestions they make will reflect on their need for a better work environment, remember that this will benefit you in the end. The more comfortable they are while on the job, the better they are going to work.
Though it might seem like a good idea to have anonymous employee suggestion programs, that idea might very well backfire on you. You might get some great ideas this way, but you won’t know who suggested the idea, and you won’t know who to reward or who deserves credit. There may be six people who will claim the idea once it is apparent it is going to be implemented and that someone wants to reward the person who first had the idea. If you know who has given each suggestion, a lot of the reward goes to those who deserve the credit. As a business owner, you know how important that is for employee morale.
