Job Fairs And Opportunities

One important tool many newly graduated college students forget to make use of is the wide selection of job fairs that may be happening in their area. There are plenty of great jobs out there, though many think they cannot find the good ones at job fairs. This is simply not true. Some companies like to use job fairs as a way to screen applicants without having to schedule an interview. If you attend a fair and speak to many potential employers, you may find that you have people calling you for interviews. That’s not a bad reversal of protocol now is it?

Many colleges sponsor job fairs in order to give their students the chance to get a job, but also to give them practice in relating to those they wish to work for. Job interviews are stressful, and the big reason for this is that applicants often have no idea what to expect from the person they are meeting, and they worry about making a bad first impression. When they learn to talk to many potential employers at a time, they learn communication skills that you cannot teach in a classroom.

There are also job fairs online. You can’t jump into your computer and meet employers this way, but you can post your resume so that many can view it at once. You can use any of the large job sites like Monster, or you can go with a local site that deals with the towns and cities where you live. I’ve used one of these before, and I did find a job this way. I did tend to get communications from people wanting things other than jobs, however, so you should be prepared to get a few interesting emails in the process.

When you go to job fairs, make sure you are well dressed, and make sure you feel good about your chances. Attitude can make all the difference. Make sure your resume is up to date and error free, and be sure to have enough with you so that you don’t run out when your dream job presents itself to you. Go with a friend if it makes you feel any better, and make sure you give yourself enough time to talk to everyone you who interests you at the job fair. If nothing comes of it don’t despair, you will have plenty more opportunities to attend job fairs in your area.
